To get the most out of the training.
This training is not about listening to a talking head. This training is about working together to take your website and your WordPress knowledge to a new level.
By working together at the end of the training you will have an optimized, secure, website set up the right way from the start. And you’ll be ready to drive your race car of a website/blog with skill, precision, and grace.
If you are starting from scratch with a new website you will get the most out of the training if you have already taken care of some things before we begin. In the next week I’ll be posting How-To tips to help you with the list below. Also, the Getting Started Free Tele-Series will cover some of the points below.
1. Open a hosting account
Note: I recommend Hostmonster. They are consistently rated one of the top hosting companies. They are competitively priced and the systems are optimized to host a WordPress website/blog. And their customer service is great. There is a convenient link to the right. In the spirit of full disclosure I am an affiliate.
2. Install WordPress
3. Create a WordPress.com Account
Note: You will need this WP.com account even though you have installed WordPress on your hosting site. Visit WordPress.com and sign up for an account. Select the username only option and activate the account before the training starts. You’re going to need this account to configure the Akismet Comment Spam filter.
4. Select a theme (if possible install the theme)
Since we are working together on your website having some raw material ready will help you chalk some tasks off your list and help you remember how to complete various actions once the training is completed.
Gather together and prepare as much of the following as you can based on what you will be including on your website.:
- Content for 1 page and 1 blog post (if you are blogging)
- Some media to upload (most likely an image or two)
- A list of 1 or more blog categories
- A list of 1 or more keywords
- A list of a few links that you’d like to include on your site as resources or recommendations
- Code for an Email Sign Up form (this is created at your email service provider website)
If you already have a WordPress website started, you have less to prepare in advance. Review the training outline and identify which areas of your existing website you are going to use for each section. If you are missing some of the items listed above and want to include them on your site then gather that information before we begin.
The call in numbers, viewing directions, handouts and guides will be emailed to you before our first session.
